J.N. Betz: Art is a way of life for artist J.N. Betz, who feels that the physical work of the garden is the connecting link to her flower drenched paintings. Born in the shadow of the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, Betz remembers early trips to see the cherry blossoms. "What I remember most is the ground covered with petals in one pink glow." That childhood attraction to color is now a major element in her imagery. Today, a resident of New Jersey, Betz sees her life as one continuous painting that flows from close observation of plant life to the two-dimensional surface. Knowing the flower from seed and the odds to overcome in seeing it reach full flower, Betz prefers to focus on the mature bloom. "I want to crystallize that peak moment because it is just that - a moment." The sharp edged forms in close focus lean against a blurred background in order to enhance the prime of flower and light. The result is an invitation to the viewer to get down on hands and knees and crawl into the flowerbed and feel the confrontational surprise of meeting the flower face to face.
