Joseph Dawley: a graduate of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, Dawley became well-known in the 1960s and 70s for his realistic character studies and landscapes. In 1975, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, and his style became much more loose, colorful, and impressionistic. Although raised and educated in Texas, Joe moved to New Jersey in the early 1960's where he remained for the remainder of his painting career. He painted in the traditional Old Masters style until 1982, when the symptoms of Parkinson's - diagnosed in 1975 - necessitated brain surgery. One of his accolades during that period was being commissioned to paint the official portrait of Mother Seton for the canonization in 1976. After the surgery and much recovery time, he found he had lost his fine motor skills needed to paint realism as he had. He taught himself impressionism and found that was very successful at it; maybe even more so than prior to the operation. He has appeared on all three major television networks - ABC, NBC, and CBS. And was featured in Life magazine in June 1993. Mr. Dawley studied with Raymond Froman, 1958-1961; Southern Methodist Univ., BFA, 1959; Dallas Museum Fine Arts, 1960; ASL New York, 1961.His exhibitions include: Allied Artists Show, New York, 1969 & 1970; Academy Artists Show, Springfield, Mass, 1969 & 1970; Hudson Valley Art Show, White Plains, NY, 1969 & 1970; Am Artists Prof League, New York, 1969-1971; Salmagundi Club Show, New York, 1970 & 1972; Grand Central Gallery, New York, NY, 1970's. Awards: Figure or Portrait Anonymous Award, Academy Artists, 1969; William Collins Award, Hudson Valley Art Association, 1969; Jane Peterson Portrait Award, Allied Artists, New York, 1970. Joe is a member of: The Allied Artists Association; Hudson Valley Art Association: American Artist Professional League; Academy Artists; Salmagundi Club.
