Michael Hennessy: Michael travels all over Europe and The United States taking inspiration from the world’s great masters from London and Venice to New York and Rome. Most recently one of his pieces was named best oil painting at The Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit in Manhattan, and he has been invited to exhibit his work in museums and galleries up and down the eastern seaboard. He is currently represented by the Lambertville Gallery of Fine Art in Lambertville, NJ (named this year as NJ’s finest art gallery by NJ Monthly Magazine) and The Elder Gallery in Charlotte, NC. Michael’s art is heavily influenced by the works of Childe Hassam and John Singer Sargent. His talent with the brush is characterized by a dexterous and free manipulation of paint along with a keen understanding of light and color. The lustrous, rich quality of his work seemingly carves images from the paint. The use of his brush represents a wistful yet studied application, which results in delightful works of art that are contemporary interpretations of turn of the century masters. Michael’s interest in art began at the age of five, when his eighty-year-old grandfather, a civil engineer in Philadelphia, gave him his first drawing lesson from his wheelchair. It was this first lesson in perspective that ignited a lifelong passion for art. When he was seven, his mother enrolled him in private art lessons. He has continued to draw and paint throughout his life. Michael has studied at New York’s Art Students League for several years. He previously had studied at Manhattan’s School of the Visual Arts and the New School in Greenwich Village. Michael continues to paint in both Manhattan and New Hope, PA.
