Seth Ruggles Hiler

Seth Ruggles Hiler:

Artist Seth Ruggles Hiler is a realist at heart and an expressionist in soul. His influences range from Giotto and Rembrandt to Diebenkorn and Lucian Freud. Whether he is painting a portrait, landscape, still life or the figure within nature, Seth’s main goal is to express the emotional impact of what he observes. He translates these images through a variety of media including oils, acrylics, gouache and graphite.
The artist was inspired by the nature and wildlife which surrounded his family’s small farm in northern New Jersey. Seth’s private training began at age eight and focused on painting this wildlife primarily in gouache. The scope of the painter’s subject matter and materials broadened during his undergraduate studies at Syracuse University where he graduated Summa cum Laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the College of Visual and Performing Arts.
While at Syracuse the artist’s focus moved toward the human figure and most specifically portraiture. Seth’s collegiate studies led him overseas where he could experience the masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance first hand. He responded to the beauty of Italian history and culture on canvas in Florence. His work was displayed at La Villa Rosa.
The painter Jerome Witkin inspired and encouraged the young artist to further his exploration of portraiture and the human form at the New York Academy of Art, Graduate School of Figurative Art in New York City. This unique institution emphasizes the understanding of human anatomy and Renaissance painting techniques. Seth graduated cum Laude with a Master of Fine Arts degree.
The artist exhibits his work publicly at several regional galleries and contributes to the collections of his private collectors and institutions nationwide. The artist can usually be found working in his barn studio in Boonton, New Jersey. When not on the farm, Seth is most likely wandering the museums and galleries of the great city of New York. The infinite peace of nature and the diverse culture of humanity are twin muses for this artist. With these two guides Seth aims to bring a fresh and personal energy to the themes of beauty and struggle which he believes will forever remain universal.

*** We applaud Seth, who painted "A Silent Sermon" specifically for the annual benefit for HeARTs for Autism. BOI's of New Hope holds this fund-raiser every April and this year one of the highlights of the event was the painting donated by Seth. It was a major part in raising over $2200. for this non-profit group. For more information about HeARTs for Autism, and to learn about why and how this all-volunteer group has dedicated there work to advocate for families with autistic children - click here - HeARTs for Autism.
Thank-you, Seth!
