Thomas Malloy

1912 - 2008

Thomas Malloy died on August 17, 2008.
He was 95.

Thomas Malloy:

Mr. Malloy was born in 1912 to sharecroppers in South Carolina. His family moved to Trenton in 1923. It wasn't until his mid-fifties, after a career that included work in factories and religion; Mr. Malloy decided to pursue his dream of becoming an artist.

Mr. Malloy has spent the over 5 decades capturing the essence of Central New Jersey and in particular, Trenton. Hailed locally for his watercolor paintings of Trenton, he tells the City's history through landscapes filled with architecture, cars, and city streets. It is told that, on request, Mr. Malloy can recapture and replicate an item or event as it appeared two and even three decades ago. His astute memory and talent will do much to convey the history and character of Trenton to future generations.

Though renowned for his artistic abilities, Tom Malloy's keen sense of history and purpose are what propels his spirit into the hearts and lives of so many. In his words, “I'm very conscious of history. If you don't understand history, you don't understand who you are.'' Tom Malloy’s understanding of the importance of history and his pride of Trenton have named him Artist Laureate of Trenton, an honor that will be renowned for years to come.

He was dubbed the "Dean of Artists" because his artwork and his words inspire so many young artists to appreciate the beauty of life and to take hold of any opportunities that may come their way. Tom is a member of the Garden State Watercolor Society, National League of Professional Artist, The Trenton Artists Workshop Association (TAWA), Artworks and the Trenton Museum Society. Mr. Malloy received an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Rider University. He was also a founding member of the Arts Commission that was instrumental in the renovation of Ellarslie Mansion to the Museum of the City of Trenton.

On November 17th, 2001, The City of Trenton - Douglas H. Palmer, Mayor and The Department of Recreation, Natural Resources and Culture Francis E. Blanco, Director, made a formal presentation to Mr. Thomas A. Malloy naming Mr. Malloy the Artist Laureate of Trenton, New Jersey. The presentation will took place at The Museum of the City of Trenton, Ellarslie Mansion in Cadwalader Park.

The Artist Laureate of Trenton, Thomas Malloy has been painting for more than half his life. Thomas devoted the better part of his life to depicting historic Trenton, and has been renowned for his devotion. Thomas Author Malloy died on August 17, 2008 at the age of 95. He will be greatly missed by many.
