Charles Gruppé

b - 1928
Charles Gruppé:
summers in Pawcatuck, Ct. and winters in Jensen Beach, FL. He has been a very popular instructor at the Art League of Marco Island since 1994. Oil and acrylic painters are in for a treat when they take a workshop with Charles. Charles says that he paints in a ³controlled impressionistic style, combining clean color with a sense of detail.² Charles presents his subjects with swift, sure strokes of the brush, a technique that is confident, yet carefree. Observed up close, his paintings are wonderfully loose, almost abstract. However, once the viewer steps back, the brush strokes blend and the images become real, an exciting, unrestrained way to paint. He teaches these techniques with great clarity in his workshops, and his students come away with a full understanding of how to approach a painting in this manner. He studied at Yale and Columbia Universities, as well as at the National University of Mexico. While painting on a Fulbright Grant in Italy, he received the Italian Government Award. He has received commissions from the Yale Divinity School , The American President Lines, Fort Lauderdale National Bank of Florida, First National Bank of New Haven , Conn. to name a few. He is recognized in Who¹s Who in American Art. He is an instructor, juror and judge and teaches workshops throughout the United States as well as many abroad in Europe.

Charles C. Gruppé comes from one of America's most respected families of artists. His grandfather, Charles Paul Gruppé (1860-1940), studied and painted in Europe until moving to Rochester, New York. His uncles, sculptor Karl (1893-1982) and painter Emile (1896-1978) were successful and widely recognized for their work. Charles's father Paulo Gruppé was a gifted cellist.

Charles Gruppé studied at Yale University and at Columbia, as well as at the National University of Mexico. He earned a Masters of Fine Art from Columbia University while on a fellowship there. He was also awarded a Fulbright Fellowship Grant and studied in Italy where he received an Italian Government Award. His work is collected worldwide.
